A marketing effort guided by UX research
With 2.6 million members and $53 billion in assets, North Carolina State Employee’s Credit Union (NCSECU) is the second-largest credit union in the U.S., renowned for its in-person service but lacking a modern web presence. While working as a designer at Mad*Pow, I helped redesign their pre-login web experience, creating user-friendly tools for browsing products, comparing rates, and learning about membership, along with reusable templates for their design team. In approaching this redesign, I conducted a heuristics review of the current site and took notes for 10 research sessions moderated by Lauren Brown, who interviewed both potential customers and current NCSECU members about their experience on the site.
New sequential navigation organized by categories
Interviewees were often confused by the original site's large dropdown menus, so I created this navigation to let them narrow down their search more gradually.
Providing helpful learning resources
We talked to some people who didn't even know they were eligible for membership, or were unsure what value a credit union could offer vs a traditional bank. To give guidance to less financially-savvy users, we restructured the About page and created a Learning Hub with educational articles.
Loan comparison tool
Viewing loan rates is a key user goal for this site. I designed a table to showcase NCSECU’s core home loan offerings (Adjustable Rate, Fixed Rate, and HELOC loans), enabling comparison across mortgage types.
A robust design system for better collaboration
We designed 74 screens (mobile + desktop combined). In addition to a Figma library of consistent styles and components, I implemented a system for content management that would allow content updates to occur at the same time as design updates. NCSECU moved into a follow-on development project with our firm.
